Roar Uthaug is the new director of the next Tomb Raider Movie!

Twelve years after the original series fizzled out and after more than five years in development, the Tomb Raider reboot has picked up steam with Norway’s Roar Uthaug now tapped to direct. Uthaug is hot off his catastrophe drama The Wave, chosen in September as Norway’s official foreign-language submission for the 88th Academy Awards. Tomb Raider will be his first English-language film.

The production has yet to hire a writer, but Black List screenwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet is in talks to handle the script. Warner Bros and MGM are partnering to produce and release, with GK Films’ Graham King producing. Cassidy Lange will oversee for MGM, with Drew Crevello doing so for Warners. Denis O’Sullivan of GK Films is overseeing the production.

It previously was adapted for film with 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie. That film grossed $274.7M worldwide, but the 2003 follow-up, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, earned a tepid $156.5M

The video game series also was rebooted recently by game developer Square Enix with 2013’s Tomb Raider, which depicted Croft’s first adventure as an archaeology student. While details on the new movie remain under wraps, it has been confirmed to cover similar territory.
