PlayStation Physical Games to End in 2028. A Sad Blow for Tomb Raider Collectors

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that, starting in January 2028, it will stop producing physical discs for new games released on PlayStation consoles. From that point onward, upcoming titles will only be available in digital format, although physical games released before that date will not be affected.
For the Tomb Raider community, this is especially sad news. The franchise has been deeply connected to physical collecting since its early PlayStation era, and for many fans, the boxes, discs, manuals, special editions, and collector’s releases are just as much a part of Lara Croft’s history as the games themselves.
The announcement has caused disappointment among players and collectors, while several video game retail chains and physical stores are beginning to speak out against the decision, encouraging people to mobilize in defense of physical media.
Beyond the convenience of digital games, many users feel that something irreplaceable is being lost: real ownership, collectible value, and the tangible connection to the games that shaped entire generations.
For Tomb Raider fans, this is not just a format change. It could mark the end of an important part of how Lara Croft’s legacy has been collected, preserved, and celebrated for decades.
