Sophie Turner Hints at a Long-Term Future for Amazon’s Tomb Raider Series

Sophie Turner appears to be settling into the role of Lara Croft for the long haul. The British actress, best known for her work in Game of Thrones, recently spoke about her involvement in Amazon’s upcoming Tomb Raider live-action series, suggesting that the project could have a multi-year future.

The series, developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, places Turner at the center of one of gaming’s most recognizable franchises. While discussing the role, Turner described Lara Croft as a character with intense focus, discipline, and determination. She also noted that although Lara is very different from her personally, they share a mutual fascination with history.

Turner’s comments have sparked interest among fans because she mentioned enjoying the process of building a character over several years. That remark has fueled speculation that Amazon may be planning Tomb Raider as more than a limited series, potentially giving Lara Croft a longer story arc across multiple seasons.

Production on the Tomb Raider series is set to begin tomorrow, June 2, with filming taking place in northwestern Spain. The shoot will first move to Girona, where scenes are expected to be filmed until June 8 near the city’s cathedral. The area will reportedly be cordoned off for several days, restricting pedestrian access while filming is underway.

Later in June, production is expected to move south to Almería, another Spanish location that will serve as part of the backdrop for Amazon’s ambitious adaptation.

The new Tomb Raider adaptation is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios in partnership with Crystal Dynamics. The project was officially announced in 2024, with production moving forward ahead of an expected 2027 release.

Alongside Sophie Turner, the cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Celia Imrie, and Bill Paterson. Executive producers attached to the series include Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Jenny Robins, Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Michael Scheel.

With Turner leading the series and Waller-Bridge helping shape the creative direction, Amazon’s Tomb Raider is already becoming one of the most closely watched video game adaptations in development.
