The unofficial book The Making of Tomb Raider: 1997–2000 by Daryl Baxter is now available for pre-order. Baxter is a British journalist and author specialized in video game history, known for his in-depth research on iconic franchises and interviews with key industry developers.
With 256 pages and a release date set for October 30, 2026, this new volume continues the story that began with The Making of Tomb Raider, released in 2021, which covered Tomb Raider I and Tomb Raider II. This second volume explores the development of Tomb Raider III, The Last Revelation, Chronicles, the PC-exclusive expansion packs, and Lara Croft’s first Game Boy adventure.
Based on original interviews with members of Core Design and featuring exclusive images from the era, the book reveals never-before-told details about the demanding annual release schedule, scrapped levels, a cancelled multiplayer mode, and even a fourth expansion pack that never came to be.
A fascinating look at one of the most important — and most challenging — eras in Tomb Raider history, when the franchise’s massive success pushed many members of the development team to their breaking point.
