Girona is once again placing itself on the map of major international productions. This weekend, the city’s historic center has been transformed into one of the main filming locations for the new Tomb Raider series, produced by Amazon MGM Studios and starring Sophie Turner as Lara Croft.

Filming has been taking place in iconic locations such as Plaça del Vi, the Cathedral, and Santa Clara Street, where barriers, tarps, traffic closures, and a large technical and security operation have been set up. The production has maintained a high level of secrecy to prevent leaks, especially in the areas where the main scenes were being filmed.

On Friday and Saturday, several action sequences were shot, including foot and motorcycle chases. For these scenes, the crew worked with local specialists in charge of controlled effects, simulated explosions, and smoke. Sophie Turner’s stunt double, actress Sasha Luss, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the series’ creator and executive producer, were also seen on set.

According to passersby and members of the press present in the area, Sophie Turner was also reportedly on set wearing the same outfit as her stunt double. However, the crew constantly covered her with black umbrellas to prevent photographs and preserve the mystery surrounding the production.

The shoot generated major excitement among tourists, residents, and curious onlookers, who gathered around the cordoned-off areas hoping to watch a scene or capture images of the cast. Security staff, however, strictly controlled access and prevented any relevant details from leaking.

The square was decorated as if it were hosting a popular celebration, with hanging bunting, balconies covered with plants, and a rainbow-shaped floral arch. Everything suggests that the production is recreating a festive atmosphere for a key action sequence in the series.

Girona has already served as the backdrop for other major productions, including Game of Thrones, but several witnesses agree that the scale of Tomb Raider appears even more ambitious, at least for this particular scene. The size of the technical crew, the street closures, and the use of special effects reinforce the impression that Amazon is preparing a high-budget superproduction.

Filming will continue in Girona this Sunday and Monday. After that, the crew will move to Almería, in southern Spain, where scenes believed to be set in Egypt are expected to be filmed, taking advantage of the area’s desert landscapes, which have previously been used by numerous international productions.
