Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will be much more than a visual upgrade of the 1996 classic. Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog are reimagining Lara Croft’s first adventure with a more modern structure, expanded gameplay ideas, and environments that feel more natural to explore.

One of the biggest changes is the way levels are being designed. In the original game, progression was built around separate rooms and areas, almost like individual challenges connected one after another. In this new version, those spaces are being transformed into semi-connected environments, giving players more freedom to move through them, approach them from different angles, and uncover hidden secrets, collectibles, and resources.

The goal is not to turn Tomb Raider into a fully open-world game. Instead, the developers want each location to feel more coherent and believable. Temples, ruins, paths, and puzzle areas should no longer feel like isolated rooms, but like parts of a larger place with history, scale, and personality.

This approach will be especially noticeable in iconic locations such as Peru’s Lost Valley, where the puzzles have been rebuilt from the ground up. Classic challenges, including the well-known cog puzzle, are also being reinterpreted so they feel better integrated into the environment rather than simply recreated as they were decades ago.

Legacy of Atlantis is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and is presented as a full reimagining of the first Tomb Raider, not a straightforward remake. The story will once again follow Lara Croft across locations such as Peru, Greece, Egypt, and a Mediterranean island connected to the myth of Atlantis, as she searches for the pieces of the Scion, a powerful ancient artifact.

Overall, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis aims to preserve the spirit of the original while making the experience feel smoother, more immersive, and more modern. Longtime fans should recognize the adventure’s most iconic moments, but new players will get a version of Lara Croft’s first journey that feels built for today.
