Sophie Turner Begins Filming in Almería as Lara Croft for the New Tomb Raider Series
The new Lara Croft has arrived in Spain. Sophie Turner, internationally known for her roles in Game of Thrones and the X-Men saga, has been spotted in Almería, Spain, dressed as the iconic archaeologist and adventurer from Tomb Raider during filming for the new Amazon MGM Studios series.
The production has arrived in the Andalusian city after several days of filming in locations across the province, including the Tabernas Desert and the El Chorrillo area in Sierra Alhamilla. Now, the crew has moved part of the shoot to Almería’s historic center, specifically Plaza Pavía, where Turner has just begun filming exterior scenes as Lara Croft. Photos from the shoot in recent days show Sophie Turner dressed as Lara Croft, with a look that slightly recalls Lara Croft model Nathalie Cook.
Everything seems to indicate that the sets built in this area are intended to recreate an Arab city, most likely Cairo. The transformation of the surroundings includes Arabic signage, storefronts modified for the setting, and spaces turned into market stalls, including a fruit stand, reinforcing the idea that Almería will serve as a cinematic stand-in for Egypt within the story.
For the scenes filmed in Almería, the production also searched for extras with very specific profiles: boys and girls aged 7 to 13, as well as men and women of different ages who were Arab or had racialized features. This casting further supports the theory that the sequences filmed in the city will be set in a Middle Eastern or North African context.
Filming for Tomb Raider began in January 2026 in the United Kingdom. After a pause caused by Turner’s injury, filming resumed in April and later continued in Spain, with stops in Girona and Almería. According to published information, the crew will remain in the province of Almería until early July before moving to another Andalusian province.
The choice of Almería is no coincidence. The Spanish province has a long history as a filming location for major international productions thanks to its desert landscapes, versatile architecture, and ability to visually represent territories in Africa, the Middle East, or adventure-driven worlds.
