Construction is currently underway on a massive set for the new Tomb Raider series in the province of Almería, in southern Spain. The production, developed by Amazon MGM Studios for Prime Video, will film across several locations in the area, including El Chorrillo, in Sierra Alhamilla, and different parts of the Tabernas Desert, one of Europe’s most recognizable cinematic landscapes.
The scale of the sets suggests a high-budget production. The structures being built in the area appear to recreate an Egyptian-inspired settlement, which would fit naturally with the archaeological and adventure-driven world of Lara Croft. The technical and logistical deployment also points to the visual ambition behind the project.
Unlike many productions that rely heavily on green screens or fully digital environments, this new adaptation of Tomb Raider appears to be prioritizing real locations, outdoor filming, and a strong use of practical effects. This approach could bring greater realism to the action sequences and reinforce the physical sense of adventure that has always defined the franchise.
Filming is expected to begin immediately and will continue over the next three weeks. With this shoot, Almería once again strengthens its position as a key destination for major international productions, especially those looking for desert landscapes, natural locations, and large-scale cinematic settings.
